THE COLE HARD TRUTH
Launching "Ever Stronger"
After 24 years in coaching, 18 as a collegiate head strength coach, I have launched my twofold "Ever Stronger!" consulting - personal workout programs, and clinics for school S&C programs. MORE
A football high: out-physical the opponent
Our six-man team, in its first two games, brought back memories of dominating wins over big powers in college football by demonstrating how an off-season strength and conditioning program pays off. Never mind it wasn't Nebraska or Texas; satisfaction still runs high over a job well done Feb-to-Aug leading to success in the fall. HERE'S HOW

Flashback at 4 in the morning
March 26, 2008, 4 a.m.
A lot of things have changed since 1982. Gas was a lot cheaper. My hair was a lot thicker.Ý My waist was a lot thinner. I could run without the ache of arthritic joints.
That was the last time I managed a real, live competitive baseball game - until last night. That summer of '82 I was preparing for my junior year of college and the upcoming football season while managing a squad of 12- to 15-year-old baseball players. It's funny, I can still remember the players' names, but I can't remember my own kids names half the time now.
Ý
This year I am coaching a great bunch of 10-11-year-olds that includes our son Shadd. And son Kade, age 15, is in the dugout keeping the scorebook, when he's not off playing a sport of his own. Shadd also has a grandstand section half full of Coles cheering him on.Ý
Last night was the season opener.Ý We lost a heart-breaker, 9-8, in the botttom of the last inning.
Ý
A lot of things remain the same as 1982. I still wake up in the middle of the night after a loss with coulda, shoulda, woulda going through my head, but it's still fun to be part of the action.Ý Hitters still need to lay off the bad ones and put the wood, uh, aluminum, on the good ones. Pitchers still need to throw strikes.Ý Fielders still need to catch the ball, and make good throws.Ý
Most of all, the Little League Pledge - "I trust in God.Ý I love my country and will respect its laws.Ý I will play fair and strive to win, but win or lose I will always do my best." - is still the same, and still the way it ought to be.Ý Last night we did our best, and the game, the competition, and the physical exercise amounted to a whole lot better than having a bunch of boys sitting around watching TV or playing video games.
There's always "next time" - and it won't be 26 years coming.
