You Don't Need Fancy
Recently, I have been putting 12 young men between ages 11-18 through rigorous workouts. We don't have a fancy workout facility. We
don't have one that isn't fancy, either.
We don't have one.
Neither do we have typical equipment. We're not even
indoors. These aren't complaints. These are good-news points for you, wherever you are, especially if budget is a problem.
The message here is simple: you don't have to have fancy to have great
workouts. You just need two ingredients I hammer home all the time:
Passion and Persistence.
Allow me to illustrate with my dirty dozen: Our football players work out on a football/soccer field behind the Steep Hollow Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas. And these young men are rapidly becoming the Steep Hollow Studs. They've developed fire in their competitiveness during workouts.
Without fancy.
Our facility is not impressive by any standards, but the
workout would impress most anyone. I'll tell you about it in detail in
another blog here soon. You'll laugh at how we rigged equipment and designed simple, but demanding drills.
You know how we're always talking about core strength in
athletics? Well, here's the core strength of the message for you as you develop
your workout programs:
Many years ago, I was a high school coach. A man who became a really good friend, and who has been an exceptional major-college strength & conditioning coach all these years, told me:
"Rod, 200 pounds is 200 pounds, whether you're in high school,
college, or the pros. And good lifting technique and good coaching are the same
at every level, as well."
I have coached in the Big 12 Conference where the budgets run
large and the facilities amaze people. But I'm here to tell you, our workouts
behind a little church in deep Texas,
often on dirt, have been as good as any I've ever been a part of.And I've been in weight rooms with All-Americans and
Olympians.
The quality of a workout is not about having a posh facility, but about the heart and desire that's in you.
